Microsoft in “Early Talks” to bring TV Services to your Living Room?

An unnamed source has leaked to Reuters that Microsoft is currently in early discussions to bring TV subscription services to the living room via the Xbox 360 gaming console. While talks have been regarding adding more channels like ESPN3, which is currently on the console, Microsoft has also purportedly discussed bringing a "Virtual Cable Operator" system to the table, which would essentially make Microsoft the service provider through your internet connection.

It sounds like many different options are being mulled over per Reuters:

Other options include using the Xbox to authenticate existing cable subscribers to watch shows with enhanced interactivity similar to how pay TV operators have sought to do over the Web, said these people.

It is no secret that Microsoft has believed that the living room and "Third Screen" is an important part of the picture and they have tried to capitalize on this in the past with other services such as Web-TV, but the technology just wasn’t mature enough at that time. Currently, there is a huge push for the living room television and Microsoft looks to be right in the mix if they can get programmers to jump on board.

I think we are coming to a place where consumers are looking to cut any unnecessary bill back a bit and services like Netflix, prove that this can be done for a reasonable price, but it’s going to take some time as Reuters source confirms that Microsoft’s solution could still be 12 months away.

I know I’m always looking for something like this which is executed properly, but I wonder if this is what the masses want as well. Would you be open to cut your cable cord if Microsoft can pull enough providers into the mix or are you sticking with paid cable until the end?
