Inside the
January 2010
Macworld

For as long as I've been working at Macworld, people have been asking me which Mac is best. To which I've always replied, "I don't know."

I don't know because the six different Mac product lines--iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air--are designed for six different kinds of users. The question isn't "which Mac is best?" It's "which Mac is best for me?"

So when it came time to assemble the Mac buyers guide that appears in our January issue, we asked six authors to make the cases for their own favorite Macs. None of them argues that any one Mac is the best of all. But they do explain why the ones they chose are the best fits for them. Our hope is that, if you know why someone favors one Mac over the others, it'll help you find the one that's right for you.

If you aren't in the market for a Mac right now, if your next purchase is still a year or more in the future, we have something else for you in January: For a feature entitled "The Mac of the Future," we asked our writers to look at current trends in operating systems, CPUs, graphics, storage, and networking, and to make some intelligent guesses about how those developments will likely impact the Mac. If you're planning on buying a new Mac sometime in the next two years, this story will give you some idea about what it might be like.

Those two stories aren't all we have in January, of course: You'll also find reviews of the new MacBook Air (including the revolutionary 11-inch model) and of iLife '11, as well as our usual mix of how-to tips, news, and analysis.

As always, we'd love to hear what you think about the issue. Come on over to the Macworld reader forums and let us know.
