Windows 8 May Use Files In The Cloud

Posted: 02 Dec 2010 03:10 AM PST

When you look at computer gaming for a second, you see a trend in recent years that moves away from delivering the whole game on a disk. More and more games require Internet connections to play at all, and we are not obviously talking about mmorpgs like World of Warcraft. Most companies implement these new techniques as anti-piracy measures to prevent the illegal distribution of their properties. While that is not keeping pirates away for long in most cases, it does give the company more time to sell the game before pirated copies become available.

According to information at RumorPedia, Microsoft might be inclined to add a similar feature to Windows 8. Microsoft apparently considers to sync several kernel files directly with Microsoft Cloud servers. What are the benefits of doing this? It should be obvious that this might make it harder to pirate the operating system.

More importantly though is the ability to update core system files without reboots or user interaction.

The cloud based system is said to have a fallback in case the Internet connection dies. It would then use backup files stored on the computer.

The plan is to update those backup files directly after the installation of Windows, and probably whenever a new version becomes available.

The connection to the cloud gives Microsoft additional options to identify pirated versions of Windows 8. It will probably not take long until someone finds a way to always use the backup kernel files. (via)
