Hiya, Korsaan. Jon here.

In my last couple of e-mails, I've focused on gold
accumulating methods suitable for lower level characters. I've
covered buying and selling limited-supply items, and profiting
from gathering professions.

Today, let's look at another juicy opportunity where you can
make really good gold if you know what you are looking for.

This time, it's about farming specific high-demand items that
most players can't obtain easily. As with limited-supply
stuff, many of the items in this category are recipes,
patterns and formulas.

For an example, sticking with the theme of techniques that
work for lower-level characters, let's take the Robes of
Arcana pattern. You can work this technique at about level 33
and up.

Robes of Arcana is a tailoring garment that Warlocks need for
a quest line they get at level 31 ("Components for the
Enchanted Gold Bloodrobe"). The quest series rewards them with
a very nice blue (rare) chest piece - the Enchanted Gold
Bloodrobe, 55 armor, +10 Stamina, +17 Intellect. It's such a
good item that every Warlock absolutely has to have it.

I also recommend that you rely on my friend Luke's "Cash
Creating Guide" for additional expert advice on gold making
opportunities. He doesn't cover the Robes of Arcana Pattern
in his 150+ page book, but he details several other good
rare-drop camps, and he keeps the guide up to date:

Tailors can make Robes of Arcana at crafting level 150... but
only if they can get the pattern. And it's hard to get. It's a
rare drop from Dark Strand Voidcallers, level 28/29 mobs found
only in the Tower of Althalaxx in the north end of Darkshore.
The pattern only drops about 1% of the time from these mobs.

There is actually another spot where this pattern drops, from
Defias Enchanters in Duskwood. But the drop rate there is
lower, and the mobs are slower kills, so I recommend you stick
with the Darkshore camp, even though it is out of the way.
You're going to have to spend a couple of hours killing for
this pattern anyway, so the time it takes traveling to
Darkshore isn't a big deal.

There isn't a lot to say about how to do this. Go to
Darkshore, find the Tower, and start killing Voidcallers.
Eventually, the Pattern will drop.

Now let me warn you, and this applies to other rare-drop
camping techniques as well: the 1% drop rate is an average
drop rate. There is no guarantee that you'll kill 100 Dark
Strand Voidcallers and get the Pattern. You might have to kill
300 of them. Or you might get your drop from the second mob
you take down.

Chances are, you'll get a Robes of Arcana pattern in an hour
or so. But it might take 3 or 4 hours. And you won't have a
lot else to show for your time, as these mobs don't drop much
of value besides the Pattern.

The best approach is to take a determined mindset, that you
will continue farming this spot until the item drops. Just be
sure to do your homework before you start, so that you know
the reward is worth your time. I'll say this over and over
because it's so important: check the Auction House on your own
server - use the Auctioneer add-on to get the most reliable
info - to make sure you can sell your Pattern for good gold.

What is the Robes of Arcana pattern worth? On most servers, it
goes for 20g - 25g, and sells fast whenever it comes up. I'd
suggest putting it on the AH for a starting bid of 20g, and
setting a very high buyout price, such as 55g or 60g. Bidders
for an item like this aren't usually buying on impulse, and
they'll be willing to bid the price up in competition with
other bidders. And you never know, someone might just go for
the high buyout, to save the bother of waiting and maybe
losing out to another bidder.

[for auction house noobs: this is not the usual strategy in
the AH, usually you want to always set a rational buyout price
to encourage a quick sale, especially on crafting materials]

So give this some thought. If you're struggling for your level
40 mount money (you need 90g, remember), why not spend a full
day of play time farming the Robes of Arcana pattern? If
you're level 37 or so, the farming will be fast and easy. And
in, let's say 10 hours, you're going to get 3 or 4 of this
Pattern. That should net you a cool 70g - 80g easily.

Some other notes about this technique:

If you are a tailor, you should consider training on the
pattern, rather than selling it. The tailored Robes of Arcana
sell for 5g - 8g, and they are always in demand. However, the
mats for making each Robe will cost about 2g, so keep that in
mind. Again, check your server's prices to determine the
potential.

This Pattern has unusually volatile pricing. Although it sells
easily for 20g and up on just about all servers, it isn't
unusual to find a bargain, where someone clueless offers it
for 1 or 2 gold. If you are playing the Auction House (and you
should be, if you really want to make a lot of gold), this is
an item to watch for. Snap it up if you ever see it for less
than 5g buyout, and re-list it for 20g.

For those of you on new servers, this item can be an even
better opportunity. New servers always have limited economies,
since nobody has much gold to spare for the first couple of
months. If you *do* have lots of cash, you can make a pile by
buying up stuff that will double or triple in value as the
server matures. The Robes of Arcana Pattern is one of the few
items that you can likely sell for a high price in spite of
the limited economy... and the cash you get by selling the
Pattern can bankroll you for some serious gold trading on the
AH. The first few Tailors who obtain this Pattern will make a
killing selling the Robes to all the leveling Warlocks. So
they'll pay a high price for the Pattern.

If you are looking for other rare-drop farming opportunities,
suitable for your level, be careful: there is a lot of out-
of-date information out there on the Internet, and in 2nd-rate
gold guides you may see for sale, about farming items that are
no longer profitable. Since the Burning Crusade expansion,
quite a few recipes, patterns and formulas that used to be
rare drops are now available from Trainers. And others have
effectively been nerfed, since they are for crafting items
that are no longer in demand as much as they used to be.

I'll tell you about the farming opportunities that are still
golden, here in Secret Warcraft. Don't venture into Azeroth
(or The Outlands) without it :)

That's it for today.

Next issue: a little love for all the level 70's who have been
asking me how to get their 5,000g together for an epic flying
mount.

Jon
