Steven Sinofsky Gives Windows on ARM Demo Posted: 06 Jan 2011 12:50 AM PST I never truly expected Steve Ballmer to show off a Windows 8 tablet at CES. Firstly because it’s simply too early in the product development cycle for Microsoft to do this, but also because their hardware partners unveiling Windows 7 slates this year would be livid. Thus, it never happened. What we all did get though was a view of a full version of Windows 7 running on ARM chips. This was expected and is part of Microsoft’s tablet strategy going forward. Microsoft President Steven Sinofsky demoed the software and talked about Windows Phone 7 being aimed at less powerful machines than tablets, and the ARM-powered Windows being directly intended for such devices. There will be issues over software compatibility but he did talk about how Microsoft are working to get Windows software, including their Office suite, working on new chipsets. Will this happen for Windows 7? This is unlikely and it’s going to cause significant headaches for Microsoft anyway having to work with several different versions of Windows at the same time (it’ll be just like the good old days really). This will most likely be the strategy for Windows 8 and will probably see an embedded version of Windows 8 customised for tablets. This could potentially be bad news for anyone buying a Windows 7 tablet now with the intention of upgrading the OS later on and I’ll try and get the answer to this question for you. Related posts: |
Opera To Show Of Browser For Windows 7 Tablets at CES Posted: 05 Jan 2011 02:37 PM PST CES is going to be making a lot of headlines over the coming weeks but Techcrunch has got some early news that Norwegian software maker Opera will be showing off a custom version of their Opera browser for tablets and netbooks. They teased a preview on Monday of the custom browser designed specifically for hybrid touch devices saying that it would debut at CES this week. In the video below you’ll get a sneak preview of the tablet friendly version of the browser running on the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Opera say that they are going to show off some Windows 7 tablets and netbooks which will be running this latest edition of their browser at CES. The current Opera browser is custom built for smartphone devices, but this tablet friendly version has been optimised to fit on larger screens and enhances the ability to smoothly scroll and zoom webpages on the larger screens. While Opera will be showcasing the browser on a Windows 7 netbook at CES, it will only be a public demonstration so you wont be able to get your hands on it just yet. However they do say that a public release will be sometime in the near future, for both Windows 7 and Android. Whether or not this will find it’s way to the iPad now is a completely different story, but remember how shocked we were when Apple actually approved the Opera mini browser for the iPhone? So I guess there’s hope, but not that we’re interested about the iPad. We’re all thinking more about that ExoPC Windows 7 Tablet that Mike just finished reviewing. aren’t we ??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=a1pnuXZVfyk Source: Related posts: |
