OnLive Demos Windows 7 On iPad and Galaxy Tab

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 04:07 AM PST

We know that Apple are very protective over their operating systems and it’s next to impossible to get their OS to run on anything other than their own hardware. It’s also no easy task to run an operating system like Windows 7 on Mac hardware, it can be done but it’s not designed to run as efficiently as it does on Windows machines. But what if you could get Windows 7 on the iPad, or even on the new Galaxy Tab?

There’s been a whole rake of announcements from companies getting ready to announce Windows 7 tablets, but most of it has just been talk to date. But OnLive has offered a real viable solution for the future. During a live demo at the Dive Into Mobile conference, entrepreneur Steve Perlman showed off his OnLive game streaming network and had Windows 7 being streamed to an iPad and a Galaxy Tab.

Technically speaking the OS isn’t installed on the tablets, it’s being streamed from a nearby server via a superfast internet connection.

Perlman showed Internet Explorer running on the iPad aswell as the Windows 7 desktop. He also demoed a 3D graphic design program and Microsoft Silverlight running on the iPad, something which Steve Jobs would be shocked to see!

“You have unlimited capability because of the supercomputing that’s happening in data centers and streamed to the mobile devices,” Perlman said.

It’s very impressive stuff, and there must be some serious supercomputing going on at the servers side to get this to work. I’m afraid you wont really be able to do this yourself for the moment, you need to have a server fairly close to you and a fast internet connection to get it working properly.

OnLive didn’t provide a date as to when we can expect full cloud functionality but you can get a look at a scaled down version of it now with the OnLive Viewer app for the iPad.

Transparent Wallpaper for Windows Phone 7

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 08:12 AM PST

This is a neat feature that was discovered on a Windows Phone 7 development blog. Posted by keyboardp, this tip enables Windows Phone 7 users to add transparent wallpapers as their lock screen choice without any kind of hack or jailbreak.

It really is a simple tip and it involves creating or finding a .PNG file which has a transparency layer already added. The problem is that you can only sync .JPG’s to Windows Phone using the Zune PC software, so the workaround is to send the .PNG file to yourself via email, then open the email and save the file to your phone. Alternatively, you can probably also add the .PNG file to your Skydrive account on Windows Live and download it from there. I haven’t tried this approach yet, but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work as well.

You were waiting for a drawback and here it is: many users and myself have not been able to get the transparency to work if you have a lockscreen pin enabled, so if you need to use a pin to unlock the phone, and you probably should, the transparency will just appear black.
