Revealed, The Chrome OS Keyboard

Posted: 04 Dec 2010 04:09 AM PST

Engadget have obtained pictures of what looks like the keyboard for Google’s forthcoming Chrome OS netbook. This leak comes as Google have announced a major “Chrome event” this coming Tuesday where they will be making a major announcement.

The image certainly looks like one for a netbook aimed at reducing the level of customisation and control within the OS itself, and definitely one aimed at Internet use with dedicated back and forward buttons.

Engadget also have an image of the forthcoming Acer Chrome netbook which carries the exact same keyboard layout so it would appear that Google are stipulating that this certain layout must be used.

One interesting thing is the obvious lack of a Windows key.  We still don’t know enough about the Chrome netbooks and it’s likely that they will only come with around 8Gb of storage.  This would preclude being able to buy one of these cheap devices and then install Windows 7 on it (should you want to) in either a single or dual-boot configuration.

It could be said though that Google is making it deliberately difficult for people to install Windows 7 on these devices and the lack of a Windows key (let’s face it why would a Chrome OS netbook have one anyway) is another hurdle for people looking for a cheap Windows netbook.

Rumour has it that the first Chrome OS netbooks will be on sale just before Christmas, and it will be interesting to see how they are received by the buying public.
