| | In my quest for free classes I'm currently making my way through the free online course materials for an MIT graduate class in digital typography. It takes basic typography and puts some experimental (and not so basic) spins on it. Because it doesn't come with the actual lectures I'm piecing together lists of resources from my own site and elsewhere to supplement the course as well as some alternatives for some of the assignments (much of the original assignments involved coding Java applets). But for something a bit less complex, but extremely useful, take a look at the Carnegie Mellon course described below. Only takes a few hours to do and it's complete -- no outside reference works needed and you do the hands-on exercises online. | | Designing Technical Documents Want a free education? Here's a good short course offered by the Carnegie Mellon Open Learning Initiative. Monday I spent a little over 2 hours working my way through the lessons and exercises in this Visual Communication Design Course titled Designing Technical Documents. I've got a full description of what to expect from the course. And once you're done, see the Dig Deeper links to learn even more about all the topics covered in this free course. | Take a Photography Class - for Free These lessons focus on selecting and using a digital camera. Your goal may not be to become a professional photographer, but learning about photography can help you take better family photos for scrapbooks and photo greeting cards and can help you when choosing photos (your own or those of others) for various desktop publishing projects.
