Jon here again, Korsaan.
Last e-mail, you remember, I went over some great gold
opportunities for buying and selling limited supply
items and recipes.
And I promised to carry on this time with some golden
tips for profiting big time from gathering and fishing
skills. So let's get on with it!
++++++++
Fishing
++++++++
This really does qualify as a secret, because very few
players have any idea what's going on:
Fishing is a great skill to develop, and a great way to
get lots of gold.
So why isn't it more popular? The main reason is that it's
kind of tedious. And that's also probably why it's a money
maker. Most players can't be bothered learning to fish, in
spite of the very real demand for quality fish.
And you know what else? Fishing has gotten much better
since the Burning Crusade expansion.
Foods made from fish are now among the very best stat buffs
you can get in the game, even at the highest levels. For
example, level 70 fishermen with maxed-out fishing skills
can fish for Furious Crawdad, which can be cooked into Spicy
Crawdad - a stat food that gives you +30 Stamina and +20
Spirit for 30 minutes. That's killer tanking food - killer
buff food for most classes, actually - and it sells for
very high prices on all servers.
In the 2.1 patch issued by Blizzard in June 2007, fishing
got a couple of great improvements. The maximum
casting duration (how long you have to wait for a fish to
bite) has been reduced from 30 seconds to 20 seconds. And
you will no longer cast and fail to get a nibble (which
used to happen more than 10% of the time).
So start brushing up your fishing skills, especially if
you have a lower-level character who could use a good,
reliable source of gold.
You can sell practically any fish for a good profit on the
Auction House. Aspiring Cooks need fish of all kinds for
leveling, and if they don't want to spend time fishing,
they have to buy. So don't go throwing away the low-level
fish you'll be pulling up as you first develop the fishing
profession. Put everything on the AH.
Remember to use the Auctioneer add-on to determine the
right prices for your fish.
However, the first big gold spinner you'll come to in your
fishing career is Deviate Fish. This fish has magical
properties, and it's in limited supply because you can
only catch it in one area of one zone: near (or inside)
the Wailing Caverns, in The Barrens.
You need level 50 fishing skill to get started with Deviate
Fish. That takes about an hour, starting from scratch. You
also need to be at (or near) level 20 as a character, to fish
safely in the oases of The Barrens. Obviously, it helps if you
are Horde, but you can also manage this if you are Alliance on
a PvE server.
If you don't mind dying a little, you can even fish for
Deviate Fish at lower level, or if you are Alliance on a PvP
server. If you can run into the Wailing Cavern instance
without too much bother, you can fish a couple of spots inside
without being disturbed by mobs or PvP maniacs.
However, the fishing goes a lot faster if you can stay
outside, and fish the oases (Lushwater Oasis, Stagnant Oasis).
The trick to catching a lot of fish fast, is to always fish in
"Schools" of fish. Roam around the edges of the fishing area,
and you will spot whirlpools of animation on the water, here
and there. Mouse over them, and you will see a tool tip that
it is a "School of Deviate Fish" or "Firefin Snapper School."
Hunker down, and get yourself in the right position to cast
into the circle of "School" water. The bobber has to land in
the circle or on its edges. If you hit it, you'll get your
named fish every time. If you miss, just cast again right away
- don't wait for the casting timer to run down!
The schools of fish spawn on timers, and at varying locations.
You will get 4 - 8 fish from a "fresh" spawn, less if the school
has already been up for a while. They fade and disappear on their
own, even if no one fishes them. You will have to move around
from oasis to oasis, and even to the Wailing Caverns pools, in
order to get the best access to "Schools" and rates of return.
Also, always fish with a lure on your pole, either the Shiny
Bauble, or Nichtcrawlers, depending on what level of skill you
have. This will reduce the dreaded "Your Fish Got Away!" result,
and accelerate your results a great deal.
Once you get the hang of it, you can get 30 - 50 Deviate Fish
per hour. You will also get the occasional Oily Blackmouth and
even Firefin Snapper. But the Deviates are actually worth more,
even though they are a lower level fish.
So what are they worth? If you sell the Deviate Fish alone,
they go for 20s - 30s each (4g - 6g per stack), with generally
higher prices on Alliance Auction Houses. But you'll get much
more for your effort if you also obtain the Savory Deviate
Delight recipe (requires Cooking level 85), and turn your
fish into the much more valuable food (it transforms you into
either a Ninja or a Pirate when you eat it). Savory Deviate
Delight goes for 50s - 1g each, again with higher prices on the
Alliance AH.
I hope you were paying attention a few e-mails back when I
told you about the Savory Deviate Delight recipe. Right? A
very big gold producer, if you do it right (flipping between
Horde and Alliance auction houses).
Anyway, there you go. You can easily set yourself up to make 20g
per hour or more, even if you are in your low level-20's.
There is much more to be said about Fishing as gold maker. I'll
come back to this in future editions of Secret Warcraft.
++++++++
Mining
++++++++
The Burning Crusade expansion has also breathed new life into
Mining as a profitable activity. It has always been a pretty
good gold cash cow, but it has been on overdrive since the
expansion.
The reason? Jewel Crafting.
Higher level players who take up Jewel Crafting need loads
and loads of Ore. They need everything from Copper and Tin,
on up to Thorium and beyond. And remember this: they need
Ore *not* bars of metal. This is because they can "prospect"
on Ore for skill-ups, and to obtain jewels.
Of course, the Jewel Crafting profession also requires... ahem...
jewels. And you get those from mining too. Citrines are wildly
over-priced on most servers, for example - don't vendor them,
whatever you do! (this is because Citrines are needed for some
of the easiest skill-ups in Jewel Crafting of a certain level)
Let me keep this short. Use the Auctioneer add-on (or just
go look at your Auction House prices now and then) to see
how Ore of all kinds is selling on your server. Then get out
there and start mining. You will make a bundle, at whatever
level you are able to operate. Crafters who have reached level 70
don't want to spend a lot of time mining Copper, Iron or
even Thorium for their skill-ups.
If you are level 50 and up, go nuts on Thorium. It is selling
for very high AH prices. Thorium is essential to Jewel
Crafters when they are skilling up from about level 250, and
they need a *lot* of it.
How high is high? On most servers, we're talking about 80s -
1g *each* for Thorium Ore. 15g - 20g per stack of 20.
Remember, it's *ore* that is in demand, don't go smelting it.
One last quick tip for today.
Get yourself the free Gatherer add-on. It keeps tracks of all
the spawn points you (and your Guild mates, even) find for
mining, herbs, and other gathering items. This will save you a
huge amount of time, and let you make a lot more gold per hour
when you are gathering. It's from the same people who make
Auctioneer:
Until next time, good luck in Azeroth and The Outlands!
